Today is the fourth day of the Design Institute, and we are working on developing our learning experiences now, but today we took a break to present the chapter projects our groups created based on Phillip Schlechty’s Book “Engaging Students.”

Design Institute Sandhills Project

Not all of summer for teachers is time off. This week I am spending time working with other teachers in Richland Two learning about the Schlecty Center’s Design Institute’s Working on the Work Program.

We are spending time looking at ways to improve motivation through designed work experiences for students. One of the elements we have talked about this week has been the idea of how designers and design affects us all. We spent last afternoon using the elements of design to look closely at how the Sandhills Shopping Center in Northeast Columbia was designed.

Here’s a simple movie my group assembled based on our views and interviews.

End of the Year Slideshow

I’ve been going through pictures taken over the course of this school year. In working on this blog, I have focused a lot of keeping a record of the things we do in my classroom, and one of the side effect is that I have loads of photos and videos that catalog almost each and every event in full detail. In fact I have more than 800 pictures and videos from this school year!

I made a slideshow using about 100 of my favorite!

Blue Track Inquiry

Even though it is the end of another school year, there are still plenty of loose ends I would like to tie up before letting another group head to middle school. One of the projects that I would like to bring closure to is our Blue Track Inquiry. During our last science unit on Force and Motion, students conducted investigations using toy car racetracks.

One of the components of the project was for students to simply play with and explore different possibilities of the Blue Track race equipment. Before attempting to explore some of the more complicated standards of the unit, like inertia, friction and the affect of mass and force on moving objects, students were given time to just have a little fun.

In the video clip I have prepare you will see a loud classroom with lots of m movement. Honestly, this is something that I difficulty with as a teacher under normal circumstances, but in the case of this inquiry I felt it necessary to let things go… A little… For one or two days at least.

I am a tad reluctant to post the video. Not that the students are doing the wrong thing. In fact, for the m ost part they are doing the exact thing I requested. Don’t get the wrong impression. Look carefully and you might agree with me that just because a room is noisy and students are away from seats does not mean they are not learning.
