Today marked the start of my fourth year as a Montessori teacher, and as I shared with students I’m starting to feel comfortable. I have never been so excited to get back to work.

We started the year by reading the book “Going Places.” It was a great way to introduce our school focus towards working creatively, and collaboratively. Students discussed these issues as a class and then were challenged to brainstorm lists of inventive uses for a series of “mystery objects.”

We will introduce much more about these skills as the year progresses, but hopefully this sort of work will emphasize 21st Century Skills important to future careers.

We also started a to read the book “Top Ten Ways to Ruin the First Day at School.” It’s a hilarious story about a boy who finds his way into all sorts of trouble through his love for The show “Late Night with David Letterman.” In the first chapter we find the boy stuck in a toilet needing rescue by 911! Inspired by these actions students began the draft their own Top Ten List.

During this time we unveiled the newest and coolest part of our classroom – the outside work spaces. Students were allowed to move into the courtyard and work on the new decks located by our room. Hopefully this will be a successful new part of how we work and learn!
