A few weeks ago our class left a surprise for Mrs. Bearfield’s class and today they invited us back to meet face to face for the first time.
They had made special “Thank You” cards for us! We also took a moment to get to know each other and practice how to greet people as we made sure to learn each other’s name.
It was sweet how quiet our second grade buddies got during the meeting. I think the big kids in my class enjoyed being role models and were treated like celebrities!3 PhotosPhoto by Tim Swick

Germ Study Results

So a few weeks ago my class began a study about germs. We conducted an experiment using potatoes as Petri dishes taking samples from different sites around the school to test where the germs are hiding.
Today we looked at our results! Based on what we saw we were quite surprised. We compared samples that had been exposed to different surfaces to control samples that had been left “clean.”
We tested 6 different sites. From our observations of germ colonies the worst place for germs was the bathroom floors that we tested. No shock there, but Surprisingly! The toilets we tested looked much cleaner than the chromebook keyboards we sampled. Think about that! Our chrome books were grosser than a toilet seat?
Here are pictures of our results.8 PhotosPhoto by Tim Swick

Class Snack Help

Our class snack shelf is a little empty. I could use some more donations, please. I know there are many people who told me they would this time and I forgot who it was. Please leave a comment to remind me. I need probably three families this time.

This week

Just a reminder that Thursday is a half day with dismissal at 11:30. I will be holding parent conferences that day, so if you have not signed up and would like to, please use the sign up through Bloomz or send me an email.
Today I emailed a copy of our class reading log to parents. If your child happens to forget theirs or lose sit one week, you will have a copy! These are due on Friday.
Some of the students presented their science projects today, and they did a fantastic job! If your child has not yet completed their project, I have encouraged them to revise their original plan into something simple they can complete this week. I would like to have all projects turned in by Monday.
Thanks to Pontiac’s reading coach, Mrs. Rodriquez, for sharing some books with our class today!Private Reply

Montessori Peace Pole

For the International Day of Peace, Upper students created a Peace Pole to help spread the United Nation’s message of peace. The pole is temporarily placed in the courtyard outside Mrs. Robbins’ office. It features the phrase “May Peace Be on the Earth” in four different languages. So far it features English, German, Spanish and Swahili, but will be expanded next year with four additional languages.
Our plans are to find a permanent location featuring a peace garden and reflective “Labyrinth” trail to further promote the elements of peace in our community.
Peace Poles are a world wide movement to spread the importance of peace linking people with the message. The pole is a visual reminder to help students recall the ideals of peace year round.9 PhotosPhoto by Tim Swick
